Lieutenant Edward Byrne

Edward Byrne enlisted in the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons (No.4959) around the beginning of the war, and rose to the rank of sergeant.

He arrived in France on 1 July 1916, probably as part of headquarters for the newly-formed 2nd North Irish Horse Regiment.

In August-September 1917 the 2nd NIH Regiment was disbanded and its men transferred to the Royal Irish Fusiliers, an infantry regiment. Most were transferred on 20 September and posted to the 9th (Service) Battalion – renamed the 9th (North Irish Horse) Battalion. Byrne was transferred a few weeks later than most, between 11 and 24 October 1917. He was issued regimental number 41634.

On 23 August 1918 he was commissioned in the field and posted to the Wiltshire Regiment. Eighteen months later he was made lieutenant.

Byrne was placed on the half pay list on 26 May 1920 on account of ill-health caused by wounds he had received. He later emigrated to Verdun, Montreal, Canada.
